Jet Harris, Chas Chandler many, many others before the dusky chaps even managed to steal instruments...... that's kind of a racist thing to say, isn't it? Indeed.   Although it's worth noting that many of the people on that list, regardless of provenance, don't tend to pay for their instruments. Jet Harris, for example, arguably the first brit to play the electric bass, bought his first one, got given his second and then another when Cliff Richard bought all those matching Fenders for the Shadows...

Jet Harris, Chas Chandler many, many others before the dusky chaps even managed to steal instruments...... that's kind of a racist thing to say, isn't it? I thought so too, though not sure if Larry meant that, he's someone I respect in here.

It's also historically innacurate - checking my copy of 'How the Fender Bass Changed the World'* - it seems some of the very first people to get hold of these new fangled bass guitar things by fair means or fou^h^h^h endorsements where somewhat dusky looking jazz musicians (Monk Montgomery,  Roy Johnson, Shifty Henry etc.) - heck even the early white electric bass p_layer_s were black - eg. Bill Black.
