Okay, once again mounting a senile and ridiculous hobby-horse (ie What the Hell happened to rock'n'roll  between BACK FROM THE GRAVE and KILLED BY DEATH ).  I am prepared to offer my (humble) attempt at an answer.   I have compiled a couple of compilation tapes of cool rock'n'roll recorded between 1968 and 1975 (all killer, no filler).  So if you have any curiosity at all email me & we can set up a tape swap (or you can send me blanks, suggestions, obscenities, whatever).         And no, it will not include anything you can hear on your local butt-rock station.  Instead, we offer such luminaries as:                 Amon Duul II                 Blue Cheer                 Blue Oyster Cult                 Deviants                 Hollywood Brats                 Imperial Dogs                 Pink Fairies (not anything currently in print)                 Pinnacle                 Rocket From the Tombs                 Stack Waddy                 Van Der Graaf Generator                 World War 3                 Zippers         (and more!)

I have a friend who continually tries to turn me to the dark side by playing VDGG and Peter Hamill and I'm yet to hear anything that doesn't make me nauseous, so, next time I'm over there what should I ask him to play me? Henry PS I could be up for a tape trade for some Australian stuff, I still need a tape of Bugger Off!

I find it difficult to take anyone seriously when they use the term buttrock.   It's gotta be one of the least de_script_ive of the new crop of music critic terms in a a serious state of overuse right now.  I think most of the people I hear use the word would toss B.O.C. into the buttrock category you denounce.  I wish we had a buttrock station here.  The closest we get is KUFO, which plays mostly grunge/alterna-_meta_l and all mass-market-accepted permutations, peppered with a good fuckin' rocknroll or heavy _meta_l cut every hour, yet features the buttrock hour which is mostly _meta_l and hard rock from the 70s and 80s.  Far from a buttrock station as I understand buttrock.  Some people think of buttrock as mostly 80's _meta_l and glam _meta_l in particular. Such terms should have a bit of standardization for them to mean anything without having to rely heavily upon context.  I suppose buttrock could be meaningful to the population at large in these ways, and others I'm sure: 1.) Rock made by gays or bi's into Greek to completion, or people that seem like they might be, e.g.  Queen, David Bowie, Little Richard, et al. 2.) Rock, or rock made by musicians or acts with name pertaining to the butt.  For instance   Baby got Back - Sir Mixalot, anything by the Ass Ponys, Butthole Surfers, Butt Trumpet, and on and on ...

Rock, or rock made by musicians or acts with name pertaining to the butt.  For instance   Baby got Back - Sir Mixalot, anything by the Ass Ponys, Butthole Surfers, Butt Trumpet, and Well, those are both better and more specific than what I had in mind. I've always wanted someone to do a KBD-_style_ compilation of early 70's rock'n'roll streetrock of the camero era with different volumes for different _style_s; y'know Krautrock, Heavy _meta_l, Glam, High Energy, Prog-rock, Spacerock, etc.  And in this it'd be really great to see one or more volumes of Fag Rock         Fag Rock would include both transperantly gay acts and bands using gay references/images either for shock value or just cause the shoe fit...and between Stonewall and the rise of the Disco era (ohhhh, hell, let's pick 1977)  rock'n'roll was awash with bits of queer imagery and identity.  And early-mid 80's hair _meta_l (80's glam) picked up right where that left off.         So Fag rock would include glam acts such as the punk leaning New York Dolls, the Hollywood Brats, Wayne County/Jayne County, T. Rex, more mainstream acts like David Bowie, Transformer era Lou Reed, Queen, even Gary Glitter, but also openly gay Jodeci, early Judas Priest, but also bands like the Pink Fairies, Budgie, UFO (some of there album cover artwork is incredibly homoerotic...check out the wrench on Mechanicks or the silhouettes of the locker room on Force It) ...                 anyway, there's alot there to think about...
