Dear John, When Robert Welch convinced many churches to use grape juice he was making a smart business move. He sold Welch's grape juice. But have you ever heard of a people being amazed by the finest grape juice? Grape juice has no surprise? You don't run out of grape juice. It sits around in the fridge and gets moldy. Your comment reminded me of the movie where the French woman spends her inheritance to put on a great meal with great wine for a group of pietism. It was a sign of the kingdom. The folks had visions. Oh well enough about grape juice, back to the 150 gallons of the finest wine. I can't wait for that wedding. Herb

Roger, I know you didn't write this to me, but I like your prayer except for one word, King. The rest of the prayer is gender-neutral, whether you are speaking of God or of humanity. So the King jumped off the page at me. Not to mention we don't really have kings

Confessors, This discussion of the wedding at Cana has certainly flowed in different directions. I appreciated the hint of humor that was flowing in the discussion that got me thinking about the subtle humor in this story. Jesus is accompanies his mother to a family wedding in Cana. During diner, the wine supply is exhausted. Mary brings the problem to Jesus who is not the least bit blessed by her request. She wants her son to solve the problem. He is blunt in his reply to her, but nevertheless he gives instructions to the hired servants. He tells them to fill to the brim all six of the large stone jars that held water normally used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each jar contained between 20 and 30 gallons. It must have taken significant time for the servants to haul in that much water from the town well. When it is done, Jesus instructs the servants to dip out some liquid and take it to the master of the feast. When they do so, they are astonished to discover that what had been water only moments earlier has now become wine! And this is great stuff - not just any of the cheap brands. Besides the servants' surprise at this incredible, incongruous event, every drop of the water that they hauled into the house is now wine. All of it! Six huge jars! 120 to 180 gallons! All they needed to finish the celebration was a little bit more. We could argue about what kind of wine it was until the cows come home. One thing for sure - the groom and the bride are saved from embarrassment, and the behind-the-scenes activity is the first sign that Jesus is the Son of God come in human flesh. There is something about transformation going on here as well. Whatever Jesus transforms, he transforms completely and abundantly.
